At Maritzburg College, we pride ourselves on providing our boys with a holistic educational experience, that is both excellent and relevant. Each and every boy is encouraged to become the best he can be.
We produce young men who are plain-speaking, upstanding citizens, who are able to withstand the struggles that life throws against them with courage and good cheer and, through their steady character and adherence to time-honoured values, make positive contributions to those around them. They leave our school imbued with a strong sense of independence and individualism – but also of team-spirit and belonging, living out their pledge to remain true to all that is College, its values, brotherhood and traditions.
For over a century and a half, and into the future, we are working to build our nation, brick by brick...
Our video celebrating Human Rights Day 2021
In celebration of this important occasion in our country, College's 3rd formers created some beautiful and personal artwork for the school, painting their hands and capturing a chosen human right they best identified with.

A large number of College old boys also took part in the race. All eyes were on 10-time winner OC Andy Birkett hoping he could make it 11 wins and a record 8th win in a row. Andy did not disappoint, having a superb race and finishing 21 minutes ahead of 2nd place Hank McGregor. College OCs featured in 3 of the Top 10 places, with David Evans winning the K1 U23 category, and finishing 3rd, and Stewart Little coming in 6th place overall.
A special mention of OC Hugh Raw completing his 11th Dusi at the age of 80. He was the oldest finisher and was escorted home by his two sons (both OCs) and grandson, Brayden - a current College boy. An inspiration to us all. | | | Fact Friday In 2003, Clint Bowyer plundered 1361 runs (ave 71.6) off various opposing bowling attacks - falling only 23 runs short of College's all-time record set by Jonty Rhodes in 1987.
In this photo, Bowyer (right) is shown with his opening partner, head prefect Jamie Shaw, after they had put on 244 for the first wicket against Glenwood. | | | | | Help us tell the Skonk Nicholson story
A call from Mr. Simon Haw, to our OCs and the College community, to help tell Skonk Nicholson's story.
Mr Haw will be writing the biography of Skonk Nicholson and he is reaching out to ask people to share recollections and anecdotes about this legend of our school.
An invigorating member of the school staff from the start of 1976 until the end of 1989, Mr. Haw has rightfully earned wide acclaim as the writer of a number of very fine historical books, including two on Maritzburg College itself, with For Hearth and Home being published in 1988 and Old Walls, New Echoes in 2015.

This year, Liesl has handed over the reins of the College Debating Society to Avi Maistry. To thank her for her outstanding contribution to College Culture she was presented with a shawl. In the Hindu Culture the presentation of a gold shawl is made in recognition of one's outstanding contribution to Culture. Due to availability, Liesl received what she termed the "Platinum Shawl". | | | Jumah Salaah at College
Salaah can be defined as the act of offering prayers to God. Literally translated, Salaah means prayer or supplication. As with all of the Five Pillars of Islam, Salaah is a highly important obligation upon all Muslims and is essential to ensuring we stay within the boundaries of religious duties and remain mindful of one's faith. The principle of Salaah is to ensure Muslims maintain their faith and devotion to God, to increase a spiritual connection to God, and to remain conscious of the importance of faith and submission to their Creator. There is special importance dedicated to the Friday prayer, which is also known as Jumah Salaah. College's Muslim Society extends their gratitude to College for allowing the Muslim learners to perform Salaah at school. Meetings were held with few Muslim parents and Moulanas from the community. A suitable venue was approved by the parents and it was agreed that ablution facilities will be upgraded in due course. The parent committee are paying for the resident Imaam who will lead the prayer. During this time a teacher and a Muslim parent representative will be on duty to ensure order. | | Partnering with Merchiston for the Dave Beetar Puppy Block @ SPCA

The next of our old collegian staff members we are featuring is one who has very recently returned to College - Brandon de Lange (2014)
After matriculating from College, Brandon took a gap year working at a local pool shop called Pool Magic, which is owned by a fellow Old Collegian. He then enrolled for a degree in English and psychology at Varsity College. Enjoying the psychology part of his studies has led to him currently doing his honours in psychology at VC. Before enrolling for his honours, however, Brandon completed his PGCE through UNISA so he could teach while he completes his studies. And teach he did; Brandon worked at St Charles for two years as an intern teacher; but that’s not the only interim job he has had. Brandon also worked as a barman, a coach at MCS, and a tutor.
Early this year, Brandon returned to College as an English teacher, which he says, was one of his favourite subjects while he was a pupil at the school. However, true to form, he’s not involved in just one aspect of life at College. Brandon is also a boarder master at Shepstone House and therefore lives on campus, he’s a mentor teacher for Fuller House, and is a cycling coach.

Currently being built in the former 2nd Form quad, this facility comprises an outdoor eating area as well as serving areas that will be occupied by our tuckshop, fabled Zarm Farm and other vendors. For dayboys, boarders, staff, parents and visiting OCs, the new Foodcourt will be a place to enjoy good food amongst agreeable surroundings on our campus. Above the Foodcourt will be an extension to the Margaret A’Bear Media Centre, providing some much-need extra area for studying and teaching, and to house the ever-growing collection of more than 18 000 books in the Centre. (The 2nd Formers’ now have a comfortable tea-break area behind the Q-block classrooms, towards the Alan Paton Memorial Hall.) We look forward to seeing this venue open later in the year. | | | Cashless payment @ College with Cashloop 2020 saw a lot of change and a new way of living and learning. Because of this, we have decided to implement the Cashloop application to enhance our current approach to health and safety, whilst providing an easy and instant way of paying, communicating and collecting at Maritzburg College. The Cashloop app was created by three brothers, all proud Maritzburg College Old Boys and its sole purpose is to enable cashless, contactless payments in our school ecosystem. Learners will be able to pay instantly via the app at retail spaces within the school, including the Zarm Farm and our College Shoppe. This means ZERO cash. No need to give large sums of money or credit cards to boys, as you can upload and transfer to their Cashloop eWallet from yours remotely. Please download the Cashloop app for yourself as a parent, and for your son. Please ensure your phone’s mobile software is fully up to date to enable the app to work optimally. When setting up the App, select MARITZBURG COLLEGE as your chosen Community and it will populate the app with the College code. More information on Cashloop here We hope you enjoy using Cashloop. If you experience any problems with the app please contact Cashloop at support@cashloop.co.za or WhatsApp 0648803732. | | | College Moms - our Zarm farm NEEDS YOU Our Zarm Farm is in desperate need of Volunteer Moms to help with making and selling Zarms.
