COVID-19 AND THE OUTLOOK FOR ALEX

Wow – what a year 2020 turned out to be! For the Rays of Hope family and all of our Alex partners, it’s been a tough road but definitely worth all the effort as we reflect on the impact that we have made.

Alexandra Township was hard-hit by COVID-19, but the #Hope4Alex campaign (a Rays of Hope initiative) as well as the efforts of many kind and generous souls, has helped immensely.

Rays of Hope partnered with over 30 non-profit organisations across Alex, impacting over 73,000 of the most vulnerable people (and was even featured in the NY Times). We were also able to bring hope to grief, trauma and GBV sufferers through counselling and educational materials to the young people, and it was all thanks to YOU.

We are very excited that most of our regular programmes are starting up again after lockdown, bringing us closer to our own new normal. We are also looking forward to a well-deserved celebration with young people who are part of our programmes at the end of the year.

With your help, we can do even more in 2021. For a monthly amount of R1,250, you can provide food, education, counselling and psychosocial as well as health-related support to a vulnerable person through Rays of Hope. For each person, the mix of services will look different, but it’s about moving the most vulnerable to the place of wholeness and independence.

All cash donations within South Africa are eligible for a Section 18A tax certificate and corporates can claim B-BBEE points for your donation. International donations can be made through our GlobalGiving platform: http://bit.ly/SupportAChild2020.

Thank you for your support during 2020 – we truly appreciate every effort and sentiment both big and small. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy festive season with loved ones, as we look forward to a better and brighter 2021.

COUNSELLING FOR GBV VICTIMS IN ALEX
Julius-Mabundu-success-story

As the pandemic forced families indoors, the number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases increased tremendously in Alex, leaving many vulnerable residents in need of support. To help the community, Rays of Hope now offers GBV, trauma and grief counselling at our #Hope4Alex Counselling Centre.

GBV SURVIVOR SPEAKS OUT

Gender-based violence isn’t just a trending topic across news headlines in South Africa at the moment, but a major issue affecting real human beings. We are grateful to Yolandi (not her real name) for sharing her experiences as a survivor of abuse, and how she has chosen to rise above.

Listen to her moving story here. It's only a few minutes long.

DO MORE FOUNDATION DOES GOOD FOR ALEX

As part of its bid to address hunger in vulnerable communities across South Africa, the Do More Foundation partnered with Rays of Hope to help bring relief to the Alex community through the distribution of food hampers.

BE PART OF #GIVINGTUESDAY WITH RAYS OF HOPE

If you or your company missed the chance to do some good on Mandela Day earlier this year, #GivingTuesday on 1 December is your chance to make up for lost time – and just in time for the festive season too!

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that is now active in over 60 countries including South Africa and is fuelled by the power of social media and collaboration. Originally celebrated on the Tuesday following #Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. only, #GivingTuesday now happens globally, kicking off the charitable season, when many focus on their end-of-year giving.

This year, we’re appealing to you, your loved ones, friends and colleagues, to use #GivingTuesday as an opportunity to support Rays of Hope in helping vulnerable people in Alex. To make a donation, visit our Donate page for South African and International donations. All donations made via our GlobalGiving page on #GivingTuesday will make us eligible for top-up donations by GlobalGving.
