Front of Pack Labelling
required by the end of the year

It has been five years since we saw the publication of the draft Regulations relating to the labelling and advertising of foodstuffs (R.429), in which guidelines were set out for voluntary front of pack (FOP) labelling. Speaking at a recent event, the Chief Director of Nutrition at the Department of Health, Lynn Moeng, announced that we may see mandatory FOP labelling for processed foods as early as the end of the year (or early 2020)!... No more Procaffeinating! In August 2019, two draft regulations were published which will prevent Chicory and other related products from being labelled as coffee. One of these drafts has caused heated debate...Read more here.

Allergen risks: A global challenge

A global allergen challenge is on the rise. What is it?
Poppy Seeds and Cannabis. FACTS member Hesrie van Heerden recently attended and presented a poster at the 3rd Food Allergen Management Symposium held in Melbourne, Australia. The theme of the event, ‘Navigate the science, manage the risk’, was excellently demonstrated, and the conference covered all aspects of allergens in the food industry, incorporating various stimulating topics and interactive sessions. Hesrie’s poster addressed the allergenic risk potential associated with contaminated poppy seeds in food products as well as the emerging global challenge faced with the introduction of Cannabis sativa into the Food and Beverage industry...
